About PalmariaPlus
PalmariaPlus is an international research and innovation project focused on advancing the sustainable cultivation and market viability of red macroalgae in Europe, with particular emphasis on dulse (Palmaria palmata) and Irish moss (Chondrus crispus). The project brings together research and industry partners to improve reproduction, seed supply, cultivation techniques, and biomass quality for these high-value seaweed species.
PalmariaPlus is funded through the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP), a European initiative supporting the transition to a climate-neutral, sustainable, productive, and competitive blue economy.
The project aims to generate improved techniques for efficient cultivation of Palmaria palmata and Chondrus crispusacross Northern Europe. Planned activities include increasing hatchery seed supply, testing optimal tank cultivation conditions such as water flow, aeration, and lighting, and evaluating farm performance at sea sites in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland.
Why these species matter
Dulse and Irish moss are both valuable native European red seaweeds with strong commercial potential. Project materials describe them as high-value red seaweeds, and broader sector sources note that red seaweeds such as dulse and Irish moss are sought after for food and related bio-based applications.
By addressing bottlenecks in hatchery production, cultivation performance, and biomass quality control, PalmariaPlus supports the development of a more diverse and resilient European seaweed sector.
